Dr. Joseph Sheffer McLaughlin, MD, born June 26, 1930, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 1, 2025, at the age of 94, surrounded by loved ones. Raised during the Great Depression by his mother Ada and alongside his brother John, Joseph grew into a man deeply rooted in humility, empathy, and foresight.

As a lifelong Maryland resident, Joseph pursued a Bachelor of Arts in business administration at Loyola University Maryland before earning his medical degree. His professional life as a doctor—marked by decades of service—reflected that same humility. Whether comforting anxious patients or quietly offering support to struggling families, he brought kindness into every exam room.

Planning with Purpose

But Joseph’s thoughtfulness extended beyond daily acts of care. Together with his family, he crafted an estate plan designed to leave a lasting positive impact. Among his provisions was a thoughtful $1 million gift, directed through his IRA and Will, to his beloved alma mater, Loyola University Maryland.
